Maria Irene Ramalho is professor of American Studies and Feminist Studies at the Faculty of Letters at the University of Coimbra. Since 1999, she has been an International Affiliate of the Department of Comparative Literature at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she teaches regularly as a visiting professor.
Her fields of interest are comparative literature and poetry, as well as Feminist Studies. She has published extensively, both in English and Portuguese, on American literature (with a particular focus on American poetry) and Feminist Studies.
Between 2000 and 2008, she coordinated several research projects on the topic of culture, identity and representation, and regularly participates in scientific events and conferences.
In 2008 she was awarded the Mary C. Turpie Award by the American Studies Association, in recognition of her academic and non-academic achievements and her deep commitment to her field of research.In July 2016 she will be a keynote speaker at the 17th International Conference of the Utopia Study Society/Europe, in Lisbon.
