Physical activity and mental wellbeing

Physical activity and mental wellbeing

We all know that being active is vital to physical health. It lowers blood pressure, increases energy levels, helps with relaxation and improves your health in general. But did you know that staying active can also help our mental wellbeing? Even though we know staying active is important, things can sometimes get in the way… In fact, around twenty million adults in the UK are not currently active… This can be even harder for people with serious mental health problems, which may mean they have more physical health problems such as diabetes, hypertension or smoking-related issues. In fact, people with serious mental health problems such a schizophrenia or bipolar disorder live 10 to 20 years less than the general population. We think this needs to change. At the Mental Health Foundation, we want to understand how people with serious mental health problems can be supported to become more physically active, so we’ve partnered with some of the field’s brightest minds and listened to what people had to say as we developed and delivered a three-month physical activity intervention in Northern Ireland for people with serious mental health problems. We employed researchers living with or affected by mental health problems to evaluate the programme and find out what worked well and what could be improved. Ultimately this study helped us understand: how we can design a physical activity programme that people with serious mental health problems can and want to take part in? And how we can better support people with mental health problems to become more active in their daily life… There are many ways we can all benefit from staying active and this definitely doesn’t just mean going to the gym… It’s all about getting your body moving whatever shape or age you are. Find out more at mentalhealth.org.uk Because physical activity should be accessible and available to everyone.

This video explains some of the things you can try when you feel overwhelmed by your thoughts. After the video, take a few moments to observe your thoughts with curiosity, paying attention to how each one makes you feel. Paying attention to your thoughts and sorting through them takes practice and patience. From the time we wake up in the morning, all throughout the day, to when we lay down to sleep at night. No matter who we are, we all have thoughts swirling around in our heads. We even think and feel in our dreams. Often, we don’t realize how many thoughts we are having, and we get lost in them. Sometimes, we’re not even aware that we’re thinking. We seem to be swimming in a sea of our own thoughts. When we are surrounded by our thoughts, it’s easy to get caught up in them and react automatically, sometimes in ways we don’t even mean to react. We might hold onto some thoughts, even when we don’t want to, and it can feel like our thoughts are overwhelming. But thoughts are not facts, and they are not always true, even if they seem to be. Next time you feel caught up in your thoughts, try paying attention to them with curiosity, and not judgment. It doesn’t matter if they are true or false, right or wrong; just notice them. How fast or slow are they? Are they are all very different from each other? Or perhaps you are having the same ones over and over again. Maybe they’re even focused on one theme. Some of these thoughts may be unwanted. But instead of reacting to them, notice what happens to your body sensations and your emotions when you have these thoughts. Perhaps you will notice if they are bringing you closer to or further away from what is important to you or the goals you have for yourself. Observing your thoughts is a skill that takes practice, like playing an instrument. Sometimes it'll be easy for you to be able to notice and respond to your thoughts. Other times, you might have to work really hard to get some distance from them. You might even have to keep letting go of the same unwanted thought over and over again. But don’t give up. Keep trying. Like waves in the ocean, thoughts are always passing through our minds, and can affect how we feel and what we do. But they are not “us”, and we are not our thoughts. Learning to be aware of our thoughts can allow us to respond with more choice instead of reacting in ways we may regret. Observing our thoughts gives us some distance to see how our thoughts make us feel. We can then choose to act in ways that bring us closer to the things and the people that are important to us. Remember, you are not your thoughts. Try observing your thoughts with curiosity. Try it right now.

This video explains why pushing away unwanted thoughts, feelings and sensations can often make a situation worse. Use it when you are finding it hard to focus on the people and things that are important to you, or if you are spending too much energy avoiding your unwanted thoughts or feelings. After the video, take a moment to let all of your thoughts, feelings and sensations be with you, without pushing any of them away. Like most people, you might prefer to avoid unwanted thoughts, feelings and physical sensations, especially if they are intense or overwhelming. Imagine your unwanted feelings as a beach ball that doesn’t go away. You might try different things to pretend the ball doesn’t exist. But when you throw it away, it bounces back. And when you move away from it, it follows you. Maybe you try to get rid of this beach ball by pushing it under water. You manage to keep it out of sight, but if you let go, the beach ball shoots right back up to the surface. So, you decide to keep holding the beach ball underwater. It’s a lot of hard work. Think about how much energy it takes to keep the ball down, and what you might be missing without realizing it. What would happen if you let the beach ball just be there? Or maybe even tried sitting with the beach ball for a while? Instead of actively ignoring the ball, or pushing it underwater, what if you chose to direct your energy instead towards activities and people that are important to you, whether the ball is there or not? Allowing unwanted thoughts, feelings or physical sensations to be there doesn’t mean you have to like them. It means that you are choosing to devote your energy towards the people and things that are important to you. Say your friends want to play a game, but you're feeling anxious or have pain in your stomach. Maybe you can’t play the full game with your friends, but you can still keep score or cheer them on! Sometimes it’s fun to just be around your friends, even if you can’t participate. Some unwanted thoughts, feelings and physical sensations may never fully go away. But you don’t have to devote your energy to suppressing or avoiding them. You can still be involved in activities, even if you need to pace yourself or take breaks now and then. Unwanted experiences are part of life for all of us, no matter who we are. It might take some effort and creativity, but even the smallest steps towards allowing your unwanted emotions and physical sensations to just be there can help you do the things that matter to you and let you live a fuller and more meaningful life.

Depression is an Illness, Not a Weakness

Major depression is an illness and not a weakness or failure. This video shows you how depression develops in the brain. I also talk about how long depression lasts. Depression is more than sadness or a temporary funk. Since it's beyond your control, you can't simply stop being depressed. I discuss the kindling effect and how it can make your depression worse. I also discuss depression statistics in the United States. According to the last statistics, recovery from depression typically begins within 3 months of onset for two in five individuals with major depression and within 1 year for four in five individuals. 40% of people start to recover within 3 months of the onset of symptoms. 80% within a year The length of a depressive episode is in the range of 5–6 months, with approximately 20% of episodes becoming chronic (i.e., lasting beyond 2 years). Estimates of recurrence range from ~ 50% within the first year to up to 85% during a lifetime. WANT TO START IN THERAPY? Circular Economy Explained

A short video explaining the idea of the Circular Economy Creative Commons available for reuse. Join the community: https://www.systemsinnovation.network Twitter: http://bit.ly/2JuNmXX LinkedIn: http://bit.ly/2YCP2U6 facebook: http://bit.ly/31Et5p5 Excerpt Talk of sustainability is everywhere today and along with it a growing awareness of the linear model of our existing economy. This linear economic model is captured in the popular description of the economy as a process of "take, make and dispose." We take natural resources from our environment, produce a product and push it out to end-users who then dispose of it. This used not to be such a problem however as the economy has grown and reached planetary limits, inputs are appearing more limited and outputs have become increasingly detrimental to ecosystems. To give us some appreciation for just how inefficient this overall linear model is, the Rocky Mountain Institute estimated in the year 2000 that the flow of natural materials globally is 500 billion tons per year but only 1% is put into durable products and still there 6 months later, the other 99% is waste. (ABC, 2001) As limits are increasingly met the emphasis is now shifting from an economic model that is organized around gross throughput of material and energy in a linear fashion. To a new kind of circular economy which shifts the focus to the internal organization of processes within which resources are used, it aims to optimize for the overall service delivered, rather than the gross throughput of products. The circular economy is all about identifying and closing loops so as to create self-sustaining systems where producers and consumers are closely coupled to enable constant feedback. For example, food production, consumption, and disposal might be organized to be part of the same closed cycle. To do this, industries are studied as industrial ecologies so as to identify where and how resources and energy flow through them, where they are lost and where processes could be interconnected to reduce those losses. In a circular system resource input and waste, emissions, and energy leakage are minimized by slowing, closing, and narrowing energy and material loops; this can be achieved through long-lasting design, maintenance, repair, reuse, remanufacturing, refurbishing, or recycling. This is a regenerative approach where things are being constantly repurposed to serve new functions. The challenge of achieving a sustainable form of development is shifting the emphasis from discrete one-off products to looking increasingly at how they can evolve through their full life cycle. This is a fundamental switch in paradigm from designing systems that are inherently degenerative to systems that are inherently regenerative over time. Developing a truly circular economy requires diversity and the interconnecting of different systems. Systems and processes that are all the same consume the same resources and produce the same outputs without the capacity to recycle them. It is only by connecting different systems in the right way that we can harness their diversity to create synergies between them. The circular economy shifts the locus from "things" to the synergies between them. Our existing linear economy is a product of analytical thinking where we divide everything up and separate everything out so as to focus on specific activities and achieve economies of scale - we put housing all in the residential area, factories in the industrial zone, food production in farms etc. In contrast, the circular economy is about integration so as to enable feedback loops and synergies. As Gunter Pauli notes it is about "using the resources available in cascading systems...the waste of one product becomes the input to create a new cash flow.” Things in this circular model become multifunctional, instead of a building just serving a housing function it becomes also an energy producer and consumer, a food producer, and consumer, it may function as entertainment and recreation. This multifunctionality works to not just close loops but also create more resilient systems because they are more self-sufficient and less dependent. As the circular economy is not about any individual product or thing it is rather about changing the organization of whole systems it requires systems thinking. As the Ellen Macarthur Foundation notes "The circular economy isn't about one manufacturer changing one product, it is about all of the interconnected companies that form our infrastructure and economy coming together... it's about rethinking the operating system itself"

Test your wits with a set of hypothetical health studies and find out just how good you are at spotting clickbait. -- Health headlines are published every day, sometimes making opposite claims from each other.
